Walt Fricke

Spreading the Good

Walt Fricke spent six months in a hospital 700 miles from his hometown recovering from combat injuries sustained while flying a helicopter in Vietnam. His healing began in earnest when his family was able to gather the resources to make the trip to visit him. Due to that experience, Walt founded The Veterans Airlift Command. The Veterans Airlift Command provides free air transportation to wounded warriors, veterans and their families for medical and other compassionate purposes through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots.

Spreading the Good

Greg Woodburn is the founder and president of Give Running and has been Spreading the Good by giving running shoes to disadvantaged youth since 2006. Give Running shares a love for running, as well as the many benefits and opportunities running provides, with disadvantaged youth in Third-World nations and local inner-city communities by collecting, cleaning, and then donating new and used running and athletic shoes. Give Running also gives out a pair of new socks with each pair of shoes they donate, and educates youth about the sport of running.

Give Running also spreads the joy of giving by providing people who want to help others with a way to help others through shoe contributions and youth runner sponsorships.

Together, we can make a world of difference to deserving youth from Los Angeles to Haiti to as far away as Africa by giving them a chance to lace ’em up and encouraging them to take a step forward – and never stop running!

Joseph Katona

Los Angeles, CA

Spreading the Good
Joseph met his friend Omar Dreidi at Seeds of Peace, a camp in Maine that brings together children from areas of conflict. They connected instantly and had discussions about their desire for peace in the Middle East.  Jump two years ahead and the boys remain friends. A very excited Omar gets accepted into Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. There was only one thing that didn’t excite him; he had no idea how he was going to afford the $42,000 for tuition and expenses. After hearing Omar was unsure of his collegiate future due to expense, Joseph said he would raise the money for him. By asking family members for donations, writing grants and even throwing in some money of his own Joseph was able to raise more than $60,000 for his friend’s tuition. Now that is Good!

Recipient of the Good
Because of Joseph’s giving spirit and his efforts to raise money for his friend Omar’s college tuition, Be Good to People awarded Joseph with our Recipient of the Good award which is part of our 5% give-back program. For those of you who don’t know, 5% of each BGTP item purchased goes into a charitable fund. From that charitable fund, we recognize and reward organizations, groups and people like, Joseph who are being Good to people, all over the world. Your purchases make this possible, so thank you to everyone who made a purchase in 2009!

Thank you Joseph; you truly are making this world a better place! Keep Spreading the Good!

Bess the Book Bus www.bessthebookbus.org

Jennifer Frances
Tampa, FL

Spreading the Good
Every week Jennifer would walk into town with her grandmother “Nana”, Bess O’Keefe. Nana would let her pick out a new book each week and then she would read it to Jennifer. As Jennifer got older she realized what a positive impact reading had on her life and that she wanted to share that experience with as many kids as possible. Jennifer named the bus after her Nana who passed away in 1992. Carrying on the tradition of reading was an important aspect of the bus and in order to make her dream of spreading children’s literacy she cashed out a 401K account, bought a bus and started driving. She currently supports her mission through donations and waitressing. Now that is Good!

Bess the Book Bus is dedicated to reading to children, promoting literacy, and getting books in to the homes of underprivileged children and families.

Emma Rose Shapiro
Norristown, PA

Spreading the Good
Donating gently used Halloween costumes to kids who may be left out of this ghoulishly delightful holiday is what 12-year old Emma Rose Shapiro has been doing since last spring.  After stumbling on an old box of her own costumes while cleaning out her closet she remembered all the fun she had had in them and thought it would be perfect to donate them to kids in need.

In 2009, Emma set a goal to collect 1,000 gently used costumes from around her area and thanks to the help of her community she ended up collecting 2,036! Now that is Good! All were given out for free October 19th – 20th  to children being helped by the Greater Norristown PAL  and to other local agencies and schools that help children in need.

Recipient of the Good
Because of Emma’s giving spirit and her efforts to bring joy to children who would otherwise not participate in this memorable holiday Be Good to People awarded Halloween Helpers with our Recipient of the Good award which is part of our 5% give-back program.
